We are very proud to announce Eddy Merckx as the ambassador of the Brussels Cycling Classic.
‘Brussels has been my city ever since I was a child, and that’s why Paris-Brussels has always meant a lot to me. I made it to a victory once, in 1973, back in the days where it was an important race. Skimming through the list of winners, I can only conclude there has been an impressive bunch of names. Unfortunately the race lost some of its importance throughout the years.
I didn’t have a single moment of doubt when I was asked to become the ambassador of the Brussels Cycling Classic, because I am convinced we can breathe new life into this race. The route seems great, with a final taking the riders through the heart of Brussels. The final kilometers are not to be underestimated, since no single road in Brussels is completely flat. The finish is ideal for strong sprinters or punchers.
The Brussels Cycling Classic is a race that will suit perfectly in modern cycling. A shorter distance, but with a great attention to everything that goes beyond the sport itself. The radiance of an international sporting event goes hand in hand with the promotion for a city or a country. Look at the Olympics in Bejing and London or the Tour of Qatar. I strongly believe that Brussels as the capital of Belgium, still one of the main cycling countries in the world, will be able to give back the ‘grandeur’ to this race.
To conclude, I would like to mention Cardio Tour. This is a project by the Belgian Cardiologic Society, to which I grant my full support as an ambassador, that promotes healthy sporting and organizes cycle tours for amateurs and heart patients. At every occasion these cycle tours travel along the official route of the big cycling races. On 7 September as well we will organize a Cardio Tour stage, during the Brussels Cycling Classic.’
