Next Saturday the Brussels Cycling Classic is on the program. After starting in the Cinquantenaire Park at 11.30 a.m. the peloton begins the battle to become Pascal Ackermann’s successor. On the provisional start list, the names of many fast men, including Ewan, Démare and Kristoff, are displayed. They will determine on the Houba de Strooperlaan in Brussels who will receive the trophy from the hands of Brussels minister Sven Gatz.
Last year’s winner, Pascal Ackermann, is number 1 on the provisional list of participants. Arnaud Démare (Groupama-FDJ) and André Greipel (Team Arkéa-Samsic) have also won once and twice respectively under the Atomium in the past five years. Like Ackermann, they are on the lookout for a new victory.
The competition comes from the fast men in the Belgian teams. Lotto Soudal puts everything on leader Caleb Ewan, who showed his fast legs several times in the Tour de France. At Deceunick – Quick-Step they count on the sprint of Alvaro Hodeg with Yves Lampaert in support. UAE Team Emirates will come to Brussels with a fast duo: our compatriot Jasper Philipsen and the Norwegian Alexander Kristoff. Mitchelton-Scott’s list includes South African champion Daryl Impey. In addition, classic rider Oliver Naesen will compete with the fast men for AG2R La Mondiale.
Also in the Pro Continental teams there are many fast men at the start. Belgian champion Tim Merlier starts for Corendon-Circus. At Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise they bring Amaury Capiot to the start. Cofidis, Solutions Crédits counts on Christophe Laporte while Timothy Dupont can show his fast legs for Wanty-Gobert Cycling Team. The French Vital Concept – B&B Hotels brings our fellow countryman Kris Boeckmans and the Frenchman Bryan Coquard to the start. At Total Direct Energie the Italian Niccolò Bonifazio can show his good condition and Niki Terpstra is also someone to look forward to in this team.
